Reflections on Birthdays, Gratitude, and Legacy

This year, my birthday fell on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024—a day already rich with meaning, memories, and reflection. I want to start by thanking everyone who reached out to celebrate with me, whether it was a call, text, post, or a kind word in passing. Each of you reminded me of the importance of connection and the power of love and support.

Birthdays, for me, have always been more than just candles on a cake. They’re a time to reflect on life’s blessings, the journey I’ve traveled, and the people who have shaped who I am today. As always, this time of year is a little deeper, as November 28 isn’t just my birthday. It’s also the birthday of my maternal grandmother (Queen Burrell) and November 29 is the birthday of my mother (Jannie Marie Burrell Patterson). We share this time of year, every year, but they’ve long since gone on to glory.

Losing them at a young age has shaped so much of who I am. I’ve lived more life without them than I did with them, but their influence is still present every single day. My mom taught me resilience, kindness, and the value of family. My grandmother taught me wisdom, humility, and the quiet strength that runs through our lineage. They both showed me how to pour love into the people around me, and I carry their lessons into every interaction, every relationship, and especially into how I raise my own family.

This birthday, I found myself reflecting on how much they would’ve loved to see this chapter of my life: my beautiful wife, Shalon, and our two incredible sons, McRae and Jaxon. They are my heart and my motivation. Shalon’s love and support make everything possible. She is my anchor, my encourager, and my partner in every sense of the word. McRae and Jaxon, with their laughter, curiosity, and competitiveness, remind me of what it means to dream big and live boldly. I often wonder what kind of advice my mom and grandmother would’ve shared with them, what kind of hugs they would’ve given, and how they would’ve showered them with love.

I am also blessed with an extended family that fills my life with joy and meaning. My mother (father) -in-love, grandmother-in-love, and Shalon’s brothers have embraced me with open arms. Together, we’ve created new traditions and memories, weaving together a legacy of love that continues to grow. They’ve helped me realize that family isn’t just about those who are no longer here; it’s about cherishing those who are walking this journey with you.

As I reflect on the significance of this season, I’m reminded of the importance of celebrating life—not just our own but the lives of those who’ve paved the way for us. Birthdays are a moment to pause, to celebrate not only what we’ve accomplished but also the people who have poured into us, shaping us into who we are today.

This Thanksgiving and birthday season, I’m filled with gratitude for the blessings of the present and the lessons of the past. To my mom and grandmother, your love continues to guide me. To Shalon, McRae, Jaxon, and my extended family, thank you for giving me reasons to celebrate every single day. And to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, you reminded me of the beauty of community and connection.

Life is fleeting, but it’s also rich and full of moments worth celebrating. Let’s never forget to cherish the people we love, honor those who’ve come before us, and live each day with purpose.

Here’s to another year of gratitude, reflection, and love.

With love and appreciation,

George “Chuck” Patterson
